The sobering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic stretch on – and in their midst – we find ourselves in search of things that spark joy. So, it’s no surprise that our latest daydreams include hair hues of cotton candy pink. We are, after all, tress obsessed. Add to that the ever-bourgeoning number of celebrity-inspired, pastel transformations and we can’t help but feel smitten with the quarantine trend that no one saw coming.
Since many hair salons across California remain shuttered, we’re sharing our go-to (temporary) solutions for achieving pastel hair goals at-home. They tick all of our most-important boxes: glamorous, fun – and totally user-friendly.
The Caveat
These tips and tricks are mostly intended for natural or salon-lightened blondes. Though you can certainly use them on darker shades, they won’t make as big of an impact. And, let it be known that we do not recommend that you attempt to lighten tresses at home. Because hair melt. Yikes.
Color Depositing Conditioners
Though there are many beauty products out there that will claim to change your life, users will attest to the fact that color depositing conditioner might actually live up to the hype. Even better? Color depositing masks fade over time, so they’re perfect for test-driving new shades.
Moroccan Oil Color Depositing Mask in Rose Gold. A soft pink with warm, golden undertones, this temporary color enhancer touts the treatment benefits of a deep conditioning mask. Formulated with nourishing ingredients including an amino acid blend, apricot kernel oil and reparative ArganID technology for hair that looks and feels healthier. Results vary depending on the condition of your hair, and best results can be achieved on light to medium blonde hair.

To get the maximum benefits, apply color conditioner to clean, dry strands. Leave on for up-to 15 minutes, and rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Temporary Color Tints
When it comes to pastel hair tones, we’ll take a pass on serious relationship status. That’s why we’re loving temporary tints, which wash out in just 1-15 shampoos (depending on the porosity of your hair). Simply apply for a watercolor like effect – and adjustable intensity.
Brite Instant Color Pastel Pink. Formulated using direct dye technology, this hydrating formula conditions as it colors. For a flawless application, start by shampooing and drying your hair. Next, apply petroleum jelly to your hairline. Using a brush or your hands, massage into the hair for optimal coverage. Let the color rest for at-least 10 minutes; the longer you leave it in before rinsing, the longer the it will last.
Kristin Ess Rose Gold Temporary Tint. Zip-up split ends plus impart a delicate pop of pink with this simple, in-shower spray. For a more intense pink, towel dry the hair before you spray. For a more subtle hint of pink. Spray product directly on freshly rinsed hair. Wait one to two minutes and then rinse.
Temporary Spray-On Color
If you’re hurting for a root touch up, or in need of a complete overhaul thanks to months of quarantine, temporary hair color sprays are an excellent alternative to box dyes and salon products. They only last a few days (making them perfect for the commitment-averse), and they go on fast.
KMS STYLECOLOR Vintage Blush. Waterproof and pillow-friendly, STYLECOLOR temporary spray-on color allows you to experiment with color – minus the commitment. For best results use short bursts in a sweeping motion rather than a long direct spray. Works well on all hair types and colors.
