This Monday, Federico students spent their day off cutting hair for the women of Maryhouse. Maryhouse is an extension of the Loaves and Fishes of Sacramento and is often considered a place for starting over. These women are often young, without family support of any kind, and often dealing with issues of domestic violence, mental illness, evictions and substance abuse.
Our cosmetology students & Outreach Manager Tammy L. did amazing work! They powered through to make sure the women who signed up for hair cuts all received them. The goal was to make sure all the women where happy and satisfied with their new cuts.
One of the ladies shared her story with our students. She had become homeless after retirement then due to her age (77), it has been difficult to find work. She is an avid participant in the Right to Rest movement and is working towards getting a home again. It’s stories like these that remind us why we give back and love volunteering our time at these types of events.
It was really an eye opening experience. We can’t say enough good things about the volunteers at Loaves and Fishes.
Please visit the Loaves and Fishes of Sacramento website to see how you can help these women.
