Winter-Proof Your Body

Winter

As Californians, we’ve grown accustomed to the luxury of never having seasons. So it’s to be expected that when winter actually happens, we’re all at a bit of a loss as to how to deal.

I don’t know about you, but when I try to blink, my eyelids feel like they’re about to crack and fall off my face, my hands are dry and ashy, much like the Sahara and if you so much as look at my hair it will cry and crack off. It feels like a decade since we’ve experienced a winter this cold and dry, so it’s needless to say that every part of me is needing a little TLC.  I sat down with a few of our experts to finds out their tips and tricks to keep your skin and hair happy in these harsh conditions.

Ms. Jasmin, our new esthetics instructor, stresses the importance of moisturizing. Get a quality lip balm, such as the Image ORMEDIC Balancing Lip Enhancement Complex, that will help keep your lips hydrated and stop cracking.

It’s also important to invest in a good body butter. If you do not want to purchase a body butter, which can be fairly pricey, you can always grab a jar of organic coconut oil at your local grocery store. The coconut oil is good for hair, face and skin; providing full body hydration. Ms. Jasmin also stresses the importance of exfoliating twice a week. You need to take off the top layer of dead, dry skin for your moisturizers to fully penetrate deeper.

Baxter at Federico Beauty Institute

For men’s skincare, our barber instructor, Mr. E. recommends monthly luxury shaves and bi weekly facials. Luxury shaves help exfoliate the skin while also providing a hydrating mask to help restore moisture. The Baxter Facial Scrub is also a great way to keep your face exfoliated and fresh if you don’t have the time to come in for a full shave.

Mr. Doug, our Cosmetology floor instructor, recommends shampooing less this time of year. This will help reduce dryness and static frizz. Switch to a heavier conditioner, like the NEWSHA Deep Treatment Masque with Shea Butter, to lock in as much moisture as possible.

Davines OI

Ms. Carrie, another of our Cosmetology instructors, recommends scientific brushing paired with Davines Oi All-in-One Milk. A rigorous scientific brushing helps stimulate blood flow to the scalp and distribute natural oils through the hair follicle.

For men, Mr. E. also recommends a monthly scalp treatment to encourage a healthy scalp. The cold winter air makes us more inclined to wear hats which hinders scalp health.

Whatever route you choose to go, the key for happy hair and skin is water, so make sure to increase your water intake dramatically, and if that doesn’t work, try moving to a more humid climate, because I don’t know about you, but I’m over looking like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket.
